This morning (January 30th), costume designer, Jenn Rogien of HBO’s cultural phenomenon GIRLS and Netflix’s break out hit original series Orange is the New Black hosted a talk at the creative space Alma. Jenn spoke about the difference between clothes and costumes, “clothes make a statement, costumes tell a story”. Playing an important role in the making of a character, she wants the characters in both GIRLS and Orange is the New Black to look very real. “I don’t believe in rules for dressing”. When you think of, for example, GIRLS, character, Hannah, it is very clear that she shapes characters through style and dress. Jenn’s approach to costume design has in turn influenced the current debate on body image, race and gender in entertainment.
